The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has awarded archer Luis Gabriel Moreno a cash incentive worth P2.5 million for his gold-medal performance in the recent Youth Olympic Games (YOG) held in Nanjing, China.
The presentation of the incentive was made Friday night by sports officials led by PSC Chairman Richie Garcia and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. during the send-off party for Filipino athletes bound to the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea late this month.
Moreno, the flag-bearer of the PH team in the YOG, triumphed in the mixed team event with his Chinese female partner Li Jiaman. It was the first time that a Filipino won the gold in the Youth Olympics.
The YOG is a quadrennial event organized by the International Olympic Committee for athletes age 14 to 18 years old.
“I wasn’t expecting that I will be given this incentive,” said Moreno, a 16-year-old student of La Salle Greenhills. “All I know was that they only invited me here to show my support to the athletes going to the Asian Games.”
Moreno said he will use his cash reward to fund his training as he aims to join qualifying tournaments for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
